The Independent Mind

Black, strong, intelligent, persuasive, engaged, empathetic, and understanding. These are only a few of the ways in which I would describe myself. I am someone who values others who are empathetic, and I believe that honesty and vulnerability are the keys to generating healthy communication spaces. I am also a strong advocate of the truth. In doing so, I use my writing - whether that be poetry, news pieces, short stories, or reviews - as an outlet to share my truth, and to inform others of how our actions impact those around us.

In my lifetime I hope to begin creating a world based on empathy and true equal opportunity. Before doing so, we must provide equity for those who have been oppressed by the imbalances of society, and only then can we begin to do the necessary work to ensure healthy communities for future generations. In an attempt to try and improve the ways in which we as a society interact with one another, I want to be a “modern” broadcast journalist, meaning I want to provide people with both the information to make informed decisions, and the resilience to disband threatening behavior. I also want to normalize discussions concerning mental health, address police brutality and prison reform, and encourage more people to fund programming that teaches young students (elementary through at least high school) about what it is to be an empathetic person. We have the power to affect change, all it takes is someone willing to represent a cause and commit to it; and that is exactly what I am meant to do.
